Geopolitical Challenges in a Rapidly Changing World, 2nd Edition

We are all part of a global world. This world is changing rapidly, which brings with it certain challenges, especially in a geopolitical context. This SAP will help prepare RUN-EU students for those challenges by addressing questions such as:

What is geopolitics? Why does it matter? What factors influence it? How can we manage geopolitical challenges?

The aim of this SAP is to develop students’ critical thinking skills in order to provide them with a framework for understanding the interplay between geography, power, economics, and international relations in global affairs. This entails analysing geopolitical phenomena through three different angles, namely legal, safety & security and economic. Thus, the programme aims to give participants an in-depth and nuanced understanding of the rapidly changing world.

The programme consists of 2 weeks of online sessions (2 per week) prior to the face-to-face week in Leiria (Portugal), followed by 1 online wrap up session. In the face-to-face week the students attend a peace conference and simulations will take place as a final culmination of knowledge gained in the online courses.

Against this background, students will:

- Gain insights into geopolitical power struggles as well as the motivations and actions of states and other actors in the global arena;

- Identify, research and analyse a particular geopolitical conflict around the world to use it as a case for the peace conference;

- Develop analytical and critical thinking skills;

- Develop a critical cultural awareness of their global environments;

- Develop cross-communication skills when exchanging ideas with others from different backgrounds.
