This course reflects on ethical issues that occur in managing and evaluating events with a specific focus on impact on regional developments.
The current economic and social climate has changed drastically over the last few years, and the increased competitive environment demands high-quality services. Post-COVID, clients, visitors, and residents are even more demanding towards event impacts paying specific attention to resilience and sustainable outputs. As a future event manager, it is crucial to recognise these challenges and develop the skills and knowledge to advise on the use of resources and strategically link stakeholders and governmental parties. This module addresses various key issues that are considered of critical significance to succeed in the current economic climate and to anticipate future challenges.
In three weeks, the topics of sustainability, impact, and the development of sustainable destinations will be critically contrasted and discussed in the context of two exemplifying case studies. In these cases, a small-scale local sports event and an international cultural mega-event are used to generate an in-depth understanding of event impacts to evaluate and identify their outcomes. Students are asked to develop a sustainable strategy for the Peniche area, commissioned by the Portuguese Tourism Board, and address the challenges the area faces related to surfing tourism and local events. To exemplify the case study, a site visit is included to Lisbon to identify how cultural events such as the World Expo have contributed to the urban and cultural development of public spaces and how community building affected both tourism and residents.
The program offers blended education including knowledge clips, online guest lectures, workshops, and field trips.
