The way and velocity how the world changes are the real revolution, indeed!

Following the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the commodity of being connected, the fusion of technologies on industrial assets and the automation on top of complete digitalization, represent, besides human side, the key for the success.

The required global digitalization and consequent transformation of data as a strategic asset for many (all) economic sectors, demand: (i) high computing infrastructures; (ii) trusted cloud services; (iii) big data enabled applications; (iv) transversal and collaborative activities; and (v) regulatory challenges - following the Declaration of Amsterdan (2016) (sovereignty, rights, security, privacy).

The results of the previous edition (http://web.ipca.pt/mei/bdi40/) caused the board of the Master's Degree in Computer Engineering (MCE), to prepare this "social platform" to continue discussing and presenting the most relevant developments in Industry 4.0, Big Data and Data Science and its impacts in industries.

    Industry 4.0 and the Rising Complexity Issue In Manufacturing Systems: How to reduce incompleteness of information and how to discover new knowledge in manufacturing data

    Abstract
    The Industry 4.0, which was introduced by the German academicians and engineers just a few years ago as an idea for provoking their politicians that they should do something for keeping the leading position of the German industry, has emerged into a new industrial paradigm, which is reshaping the research, development and innovation in manufacturing industries worldwide.
    The aim of the contribution is to give an introduction into the Industry 4.0 topic from the author’s perspective and to discuss the growing issue of complexity, which is being induced by the Industry 4.0 principles. There are many drivers of complexity in contemporary manufacturing. Two of them, in particular the incompleteness of information and lack of advanced knowledge will be addressed in more detail. Several approaches and (industrial) examples will be shown how to reduce incompleteness of information by introducing data acquisition and monitoring systems, which close the control loop in manufacturing systems. Besides, vast amount of data is being collected and stored, which, in turn, can be used for advanced data analytics and knowledge discovery.

    Two cases from high-pressure die casting and plastic injection molding will be presented showing the benefits of implementing Big Data methods in industry.

    Data Scientist and Business Strategy

    Abstract
    O data scientist tem como principal papel responder a questões relevantes para o negócio das organizações utilizando dados combinados com técnicas e algoritmos especificos para o propósito. Essas questões podem ser de diferentes naturezas, desde deteção automática de tópicos em emails, ao cálculo da combinação de caixas ótima para expedir uma encomenda, passando ainda pelo planeamento automático de trabalho numa fábrica, sendo que todo o processo de data science visa sempre a criação de valor para o negócio. Esse valor pode ser traduzido e quantificado em diferentes métricas, como redução de custos com pessoal ou de processo, redução de tempos ou criação de oportunidades de negócio. Nesta sessão será realizada uma breve contextualização do que é data science e o seu papel nos diferentes tipos de organizações quer através de uma apresentação expositiva quer através de exemplos de projetos aplicados na industria da gestão de cadeias de abastecimento. Será ainda abordado o tópico do papel de um gestor de equipas de data science com todos os desafios adjacentes bem como os perfis dos vários membros de uma equipa desta natureza e uma breve passagem pelas principais métricas de sucesso de um projecto de data science.

    Quantum Computing and Industry 4.0

    Abstract
    Quantum computing is an emerging computing paradigm that has created high expectations due to the fast progression of the technology during the last years. Several European, American and Australian companies are competing to create an scalable and competitive quantum computer which can surpass the current limits of the classical computation. How will it impact in the Industry? In this talk, the concept and technologies of Quantum Computing will be briefly introduced and the possible future usages in the areas of Big Data and Industry 4.0 analysed to find possible answers to this question.
